Kava Bar Payment Processing
A kava bar that sells kava drinks, food and merchandise is a food and beverage business, and it can usually get standard card processing for tap, chip, tips, tabs and online orders. Kava bars that also sell kratom, 7-OH or hemp THC products get underwritten as high risk, and Canna Merchant Accounts boards both kinds with the right setup for each.

This page is part of our high-risk industries we serve. It covers kava bars, kava lounges, kava cafes with retail shelves, and kava brands selling online.
Kava is a different plant from kratom
Kava comes from the root of Piper methysticum, a plant from the South Pacific. It is legal federally and sold as a food and beverage product. Kratom comes from the leaves of a Southeast Asian tree, and several kratom-derived compounds were placed in Schedule I by DEA on August 26, 2026, with 7-OH scheduling pending.
Processors know the difference when you show them. Trouble starts when a kava bar’s menu or shelves also carry kratom shots, 7-OH tablets or hemp THC drinks. Then the bar is underwritten on the riskiest product it sells, and an application that left those products out can end in termination.
Payment setup for a kava bar
A kava bar runs like a cafe or a bar. Your payment setup should handle the way people actually order.
Counter and bar POS
Tap, chip and swipe terminals for walk-up orders and shells at the bar.
Tips
Tip prompts on the terminal for bartenders and staff. Confirm your POS can split and report tips the way you pay them out.
Open tabs
Regulars often run a tab for the night. A tab pre-authorizes a card at open and captures the final amount at close, so the bar is not chasing walkouts.
Events and mobile
Mobile readers for live music nights, markets, festivals and pop-ups away from the bar.
Online merch and kava
Ecommerce gateway integrations for Shopify, WooCommerce and other platforms, for selling kava powder, shells, apparel and gift cards online.
Memberships
Recurring billing for membership programs, monthly kava clubs or subscription shipments.
We also offer virtual terminals for phone and catering orders, chargeback and fraud tools, and PCI-compliant infrastructure. Next-day funding is available. See our payment processing page for details.
Some mainstream processors restrict kava itself. As of October 2026, Stripe’s U.S. restricted businesses list includes “substances designed to mimic illegal drugs, including kava,” so a kava bar on Stripe can be shut down even with a clean menu. Canna Merchant Accounts boards kava bars directly with acquirers that accept the category. If you are on an aggregator today, see how Stripe, Square and PayPal treat restricted products.
Why kava bars that sell kratom get treated differently
Underwriters price risk by product. A kava-only bar looks like a coffee shop or a juice bar with a nightlife schedule. Add kratom and the account moves into the kratom risk category, where processors check federal scheduling, state and local bans, COAs and health claims.
| What you sell | How processors usually see it | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Kava drinks, food, merch | Food and beverage retail | Standard documents. Fewer restrictions. |
| Plus natural leaf kratom | High risk | Product list, COAs, state and local law review, no health claims. See kratom merchant accounts. |
| Plus concentrated 7-OH products | Restricted by many processors | 7-OH temporary scheduling is pending. Expect closer review or a requirement to drop the products. |
| Plus hemp THC drinks or edibles | Restricted or prohibited by many acquirers | Federal hemp redefinition applies December 11, 2026. See hemp THC payment processing. |
Some kava bars choose to keep kratom off the menu for exactly this reason. Others sell it and accept the closer review. Either way works if the processor sees the full picture. Read more on how 7-OH scheduling affects merchants.
If kratom, 7-OH or hemp THC products are on your menu, your shelves or your website, list them on your application. A bar boarded as kava-only that turns out to sell kratom risks termination and held funds.
Keeping disputes low at a bar
Bar chargebacks often come from customers who do not recognize the charge on their statement or who dispute a tab they forgot about. A few habits cut them down. Use a billing descriptor that matches the name on your sign, so the charge is recognizable. Close tabs the same night and keep the itemized ticket with the signature or tap record. Keep event ticket and private booking terms in writing, including your refund policy. When a dispute does come in, that paper trail is what wins it. Our guide to chargeback thresholds for high-risk merchants covers the ratios processors watch.

Kava bar payment processing FAQ
Is a kava bar considered high risk for credit card processing?
A kava bar that sells only kava, food and merchandise is usually treated as food and beverage retail. Adding kratom, 7-OH or hemp THC products moves it into high-risk underwriting.
Is kava legal in the US?
Yes. Kava (Piper methysticum) is legal federally and sold as a food and beverage product. It is a different plant from kratom.
Can a kava bar run tabs and take tips on cards?
Yes. A POS that supports pre-authorized tabs and tip prompts handles both. Confirm tip reporting works the way you pay staff.
Why did my processor flag my kava bar?
The usual reason is a product the processor associates with higher risk, most often kratom, 7-OH or hemp THC, or a website that makes health claims. Disclose your full product mix and keep claims off your site and menu.
Can I sell kava online with a merchant account?
Yes. Ecommerce gateway integrations with Shopify, WooCommerce and other platforms support online sales of kava powder, merchandise and gift cards.
Status as of October 12, 2026. Kratom and hemp rules are changing. This page is general information and is not legal advice.
