Wellness Shop & Supplement Merchant Accounts
Wellness shops, supplement brands and nutraceutical sellers can get a merchant account through a high-risk acquirer when their product claims stay within FDA and FTC rules and any subscription or free trial follows Visa and Mastercard requirements. Health claims, auto-ship chargebacks and ingredients like CBD, kratom or mushroom extracts are what push these businesses into high risk.

This page is part of our high-risk industries we serve. It covers supplement merchant accounts for online brands, nutraceutical merchant accounts for subscription sellers, and wellness merchant accounts for retail stores that mix supplements with CBD, kava or kratom.
Who this page is for
Wellness shops
Retail stores selling supplements, teas, tinctures, topicals and functional drinks.
Supplement and nutraceutical brands
Online and wholesale sellers of vitamins, sports nutrition, nootropics and specialty formulas, including auto-ship programs.
Functional mushroom and herbal brands
Lion’s mane, reishi, cordyceps and other mushroom products, plus herbal extracts and blends.
Mixed-category stores
Wellness shops that also carry CBD, kava or kratom. Each of those categories gets its own product review.
Why supplements and wellness products are high risk
Health claims
Claims are the first thing an underwriter reads. A dietary supplement may make structure/function claims (“supports joint comfort”) if it carries the FDA disclaimer that the statement has not been evaluated by FDA and the product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, and if the company notifies FDA within 30 days of first marketing the claim. Disease claims (“treats arthritis,” “lowers blood pressure,” “fights cancer”) turn a supplement into an unapproved drug in FDA’s eyes.
The FTC enforces the advertising side. Its Health Products Compliance Guidance, published in December 2022, requires competent and reliable scientific evidence for health claims. In April 2023 the FTC sent notices of penalty offenses to 670 companies selling health products, which exposes companies that received them to civil penalties for unsubstantiated claims. Influencer posts, testimonials and before-and-after photos count as your advertising.
Subscription and auto-ship chargebacks
Auto-ship drives repeat revenue and repeat disputes. Customers who forget they enrolled, cannot find a way to cancel, or did not understand a trial converted to full price file “not recognized” and “cancelled recurring” chargebacks. Card networks monitor dispute ratios, and our guide to chargeback thresholds for high-risk merchants covers what acquirers watch.
Ingredients
Some wellness ingredients carry their own regulatory risk. In December 2024 FDA told food manufacturers that Amanita muscaria and its constituents (muscimol, ibotenic acid, muscarine) are not authorized for use in conventional food. CBD, kratom and hemp THC each have separate federal and state rules. Disclose them all.
Card network rules for free trials and subscriptions
Both major card brands have specific rules for merchants that convert trials or introductory offers into recurring charges. Acquirers expect to see them built into your checkout before approval.
| Requirement | Visa (effective April 2020) | Mastercard (effective April 2019, physical-product free trials) |
|---|---|---|
| Consent | Express cardholder consent to future charges at enrollment, after disclosure of trial length, price and cancellation terms | Cardholder agreement captured at enrollment, and consent again before billing after the trial |
| Receipt | Receipt after the first transaction, even at $0, with the terms and how to cancel | Receipt by email or text for each charge, with cancellation instructions |
| Notice before billing | Reminder at least 7 days before the first charge after a trial or intro period | Notice before billing with amount, date, statement descriptor and how to cancel |
| Cancellation | Easy online cancellation, regardless of how the customer signed up | Direct link to online cancellation on the site, plus a customer service phone number, and written confirmation of cancellation |
| Descriptor and coding | “Trial” type descriptor on the first post-trial charge | Registration in the Mastercard Registration Program and MCC 5968 |
Mastercard’s rules started with nutraceutical free trials, which is why supplement brands with “just pay shipping” offers get the closest look.
The Eighth Circuit vacated the FTC’s 2024 click-to-cancel amendments to the Negative Option Rule in July 2025. The FTC opened a new rulemaking with an advance notice in March 2026, and no new rule has been finalized. The Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act (ROSCA) still applies to online subscriptions: clear disclosure of material terms before billing, express informed consent, and a simple way to stop recurring charges. Several states have their own automatic renewal laws.
What underwriters look for
Every application gets a pre-review before it goes to an acquirer. We check that refund, privacy, shipping and terms policies are posted, that lab results are available, and that licensing is in place where it applies. The banks behind the acquirer need to see the same.
- Formation documents, owner IDs, and beneficial ownership for each owner at 25% or more
- A full product list with ingredients, plus label images for each SKU
- Lab results or COAs, especially for CBD, mushroom and botanical products
- Your website and ad copy, reviewed for disease claims, unsupported testimonials and missing disclaimers
- For subscriptions: screenshots of the checkout disclosure, consent box, receipt, pre-billing reminder and online cancellation flow
- Fulfillment and supplier details, and manufacturer GMP documentation if you have it
- Three to six months of bank and processing statements, with chargeback history if you have processed before
Payment options for wellness merchants
Retail POS
Tap, chip and swipe terminals for the store, plus mobile readers for markets and events.
Ecommerce and recurring billing
Shopify, WooCommerce and other gateway integrations, with recurring billing for auto-ship.
Chargeback and fraud tools
Tools to catch disputes early and keep subscription ratios in range.
ACH and eCheck
For wholesale accounts, practitioners and distributors.
Virtual terminals, PCI-compliant infrastructure and multi-currency support are also available, and next-day funding is available. See payment processing for details.
Mixed product lines
A wellness shop with a CBD shelf, a kava bar counter or kratom capsules is underwritten on its riskiest product. CBD needs COAs and clean labels; see CBD merchant accounts. We board kava bars directly, and kava on its own is usually straightforward; see kava bar payment processing. Kratom gets separate product review because of 2026 DEA scheduling actions on kratom alkaloids; see kratom merchant accounts. If you sell through Stripe, Square or PayPal today, our post on why those platforms close CBD accounts explains the pattern.
How our process works
- Apply. Send your product list, sales channels and any subscription or trial offers.

- Approval and setup. We set up your gateway, recurring billing, terminals and descriptor.
- Go live. Start processing, with one point of contact for payments and funding.

Wellness and supplement merchant account FAQ
Why are supplements considered high risk for payment processing?
Health claims, subscription chargebacks and ingredient risk. Acquirers review product claims against FDA and FTC rules, check how auto-ship and trial offers are disclosed and cancelled, and look closely at ingredients like CBD, kratom and mushroom extracts.
Can a nutraceutical company offer free trials?
Yes, if the offer follows card network rules. Visa requires express consent, a receipt, a reminder at least 7 days before billing and online cancellation. Mastercard requires registration, MCC 5968 and an online cancellation link for physical-product free trials.
What health claims can a supplement make?
Structure/function claims, with the FDA disclaimer and a notification to FDA within 30 days of first marketing. Claims that a product diagnoses, treats, cures or prevents a disease are drug claims and cause declines and terminations.
Is the FTC click-to-cancel rule in effect?
No. The Eighth Circuit vacated it in July 2025, and the FTC started a new rulemaking in March 2026. ROSCA still requires clear disclosure, express consent and a simple way to cancel online subscriptions.
Can a wellness shop that sells CBD or kratom get a merchant account?
Yes, if every product category is disclosed. The account is underwritten on the riskiest product, so CBD needs COAs and clean labels, and kratom gets its own product review.
What documents do I need for a supplement merchant account?
Formation documents, owner IDs, a product list with labels, lab results, posted refund, privacy, shipping and terms policies, recent bank and processing statements, and screenshots of any subscription checkout and cancellation flow.
